Risking Unpopularity

I like "The English Patient".

I don't like "Yelling At Briefcases".

I like brussel sprouts.

I don't like leggings.

I like some of James Blunt's songs.

Has there been some sort of cultural backlash against THE ENGLISH PATIENT? When the film was about to come out, I had a writing teacher who told me in hushed tones that she didn't like the book, and so despite the stellar cast of the film, was unlikely to see it. She seemed to think she was the only person who didn't like the novel. I subsequently found myself as the only person I knew voicing qualms about the film, because -- despite the presence of Juliette Binoche -- I'm not really a fan of "true love" that requires marital infidelity. It's one of my few ethics.

Has the snake come around to bite its own tail, and now the film isn't beautiful and moving, but overblown and a bit long for what it does? And you're the only person who not only liked it then but likes it now?

I doubt I'm the only one, but I do know a lot of people who don't like "The English Patient" because it's too long or too overdramatic or too sappy or too self-indulgent or too preachy. Personally, I've always loved the movie. Have you ever seen it?
