Bad News For The Caboose

This eloquent article elucidates so much that I will simply let it speak for itself, but it shall not go unmentioned that my desire to take violin lessons was just increased to near epic levels and although I'll never be Joshua Bell, the house may have to wait to be painted yet again.

The violin is such a damn hard instrument to play well, and while men like Joshua Bell are unquestionably masters, watching Andrew Bird play live is even more humbling because you know the dude is making it up while he's playing it, which is just shattering when you see how flawless his bow movement is.

I read this article earlier today. While I find it interesting, I don't think that this kind of experiment is fair to those who were passing by. After all, they were there because they had someplace to go.

True, Kim, but I think that's the purpose of the experiment. If they'd placed Joshua on a platform where people HAVE to stop and wait, they would have completely changed the outcome. The idea was to see how many people would stop and take a moment from their day to pay attention to pure beauty. The people that did stop also had someplace to go, but heard something so beautiful that they simply had to stop and listen. It's like taking a little longer lunch so you can hang in the park on a beautiful summer day, it's like stopping on your walk into work to smell a flower or pat a passing dog, it's like finding time to goof on your blog while you're supposed to be finding a sign vendor.

The crux for me is that sometimes the positions we put ourselves in aren't fair. I mean, is work so important you can't stop and take a moment out of your day to just enjoy something unexpected?

Agreed. But don't think I didn't spend hours the next day indulging myself in "Twin Peaks" marathons and skipping out on "Clean The Garage" day.
